about this ramen: we always balked at the idea that a vegan 'tonkotsu'-style ramen could come close to matching the decadence of a proper, long-simmered pork bone soup, but this substitute blew our minds when we first tried it. this bowl comes with a healthy but gentle dose of our house rayu chilli oil and sunset powder spice blend- for a little kick and a hit of sesame. the name, sunset red, is a nod to keizo shimamoto’s legendary nyc shop ramen shack, which I was fortunate enough to visit in 2019 just before it closed.

Amazing as always

Me and my partner buy these for takeaway nights and we are never ever disappointed! Vegan sunset is our favourite. It's also nice as a person with a disability to have an easy meal to cook, I find the meal kits really helpful!

Superbly crafted ramen. Happens to be vegan too. The stock is amazing and the noodles soft and moreish. The accompanying veg egg n nori provide additional interest. Totally satisfying and recommended

Best ramen ever

The best veggie ramen

It's so hard to find good vegetarian ramen and this one is so good! There are several ramen spots in my neighbourhood but none have nailed the veggie versions like Matsudai. I also really appreciate that there's more than one option, although sunset will always be my favourite.

Restaurant quality at home

We really love the Matsudai Ramen offerings. It's great that they have a variety of meat and vegan options - the vegan sunset red ramen is a particular favourite (I'm veggie so always add an egg!) with just the right amount of kick. Easy to heat and ensemble for a delicious dinner.

Oh my days!

I first read about the ramen kits back in lock down via a certain Mr R. Periodically I would tease myself by looking at the menu. Finally I have found myself in a financial situation where I can treat myself. WOW! Well worth the wait, and the money. Delicious and nourishing. Beautiful depth of flavour. A whole portion was plenty for a meal; divided between 2 made a wholesome snack. I will definitely be ordering again.

Good for chilli fans

This was only my second Matsudai ramen (tried the vegan miso first), and I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect.
The vegan sunset red was very tasty, and easy to prepare (mine was from frozen). The noodles were beautiful, and I love the chasu tofu. There was less of the umami depth of the vegan miso, which I preferred

A good, flavoursome ramen..... whether you are vegan, veggie or omnivore

I confess up front, I'm not vegan or veggie, I pretty much eat anything. But that also means that I try most anything. I've enjoyed all sorts of veggie and vegan stuff for a few years. Matsudai have a way to make their vegan ramen stocks rich, generally using oat milk, and their marinated/cooked tofu slice are a great topping for ramen. Bear in mind that ramen usually has small amounts of topping, so if you have pork chashu it will only be a couple of slices, so someone who normally eats meat isn't forgoing much. The 'sunset' sauce is a good touch (common to both meat or vegan offerings from Matsudai) and gives a pleasant level of spice (and if you want less you just add less). This is truly delicious, and having eaten several of Matsudai's meat versions and their vegan equivalents I can honestly say I am very happy to recommend the vegan versions, they're delicious and as special as anything else they make.

Delicious and filling

Really REALLY nice... but not quite what we ordered.

We ordered the Sunset Red Tonkotsu Ramen and the Vegan Sunset Red Ramen kits and they were both incredible. The broths were on another level! But... while both were labelled Sunset Red I'm not sure if the wrong items had been placed in the boxes. Utterly delicious but not a hint of chilli heat or even redness in colour. Still, so good we'll probably order again just to see if we get some heat next time.
