RESTAURANT FAQs
* If you have any further questions please get in touch.
What are your opening hours?
Our kitchen is currently open 5pm – 9pm Wednesday – Saturday and 12pm – 3pm on Saturdays.
We also open for special days; Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day and Sundays before bank holiday Mondays, as well as one-off collaborations and supper clubs throughout the year. To be in the know about upcoming events and special menus, join our mailing list.
Do you take walk-ins?
Absolutely. To be sure of a spot, it’s quick and easy to book, but we’ll always do our best to accommodate walk-ins during every service.
Can I celebrate my special event at Matsudai?
We’d love you to! If you’d like to bring a cake or fancy a specific table, please be in touch to arrange your celebration: thebank@matsudai.co.uk
How long can I spend on my table?
We schedule between 75 and 90 minutes for each reservation, depending on the size of the group. We’ve found that this works really well for our food and service style and doesn’t rush our guests.
Can you cater for my dietary requirements or allergies?
The information below applies to our regular restaurant menu. For special events and set menus, we may not be able to offer vegetarian alternatives or accommodate dietary requirements in the usual way. Please refer to the event information or get in touch with us to check: thebank@matsudai.co.uk
There are always vegetarian and vegan ramen available on our menu.
We can cater for most allergies, except for soya and severe sesame allergies. Please note that our kitchen handles most common food allergens. While we follow best practice and take precautions to reduce cross-contamination, we cannot guarantee that any menu item is completely free from allergens. Guests with severe allergies should carefully consider this before visiting.
We’ll always have a ramen on our menu that can be made without pork and without sake (alcohol) on request.
We’re not able to offer gluten-free ramen. However, we can offer a karaage don — a rice bowl topped with either our chicken or oyster mushroom karaage.
We use Red Lion eggs and pasteurised egg yolks in our kitchen.
For further enquiries, please get in touch: thebank@matsudai.co.uk
Can I bring my dog?
We’d be delighted to meet them. Well behaved dogs are more than welcome.
If your dog is large and requires some dedicated floor space, please let us know so we can accommodate them during a busy service. You can make a note on your reservation or drop us a line: thebank@matsudai.co.uk
Do you offer takeaway?
The quality of our ramen is our number one priority, and we haven’t yet found a way to offer hot takeaway from the restaurant without compromising the bite and texture of our noodles.
That said, you can order Matsudai at Home. Our ramen kits offer a bigger menu, year-round specials, and the same incredible quality — ready in minutes and shipped next day across the UK. Keep a few kits in the freezer for when the craving hits.
How should I get to Matsudai at The Bank?
From central Cardiff, catch the number 8 or 9 bus from stop JR on Wood Street — both stop directly outside the restaurant.
Alternatively, we’re a 13-minute walk from Cardiff Central Station and just 6 minutes from Grangetown Station.
Is there parking nearby?
We’re located in a busy neighbourhood, and parking can be limited. There are pay-and-display spaces on Taff Embankment, and disability parking spaces directly opposite the restaurant on Clare Road.
You’ll also find general on-street parking spaces on Clare Road and adjoining streets, such as Hereford Street, Sussex Street and the surrounding area. Make sure you park outside of designated residential bays.
How do deposits work?
We require a £10 per person deposit for tables of five or more. This will be deducted from your bill when you dine with us.
If you’d prefer the deposit to be refunded to the card you paid with, we can do this on request. Please note that refunds are processed via our booking system and may take up to three banking days to reach you.
You can amend or cancel your reservation with 24 hours notice or more. If you cancel or reduce your party size with more than 24 hours notice, your deposit will be refunded accordingly.
For no-shows or cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice, it is our policy to retain the deposit. If you arrive with fewer guests than booked, we will retain the proportion of the deposit relating to the absent guests.
How can I amend my reservation?
You can change the date, time, or party size by following the Manage Reservation link in your confirmation email. You can also cancel your booking via the same email.
If you need help, please contact us at: thebank@matsudai.co.uk
What size group can I bring?
Our largest single table seats eight guests, and you can book for up to eight people online.
We can often accommodate larger groups across multiple tables. If you’re happy to be seated this way, please get in touch to enquire: thebank@matsudai.co.uk
Where will I be seated?
Our restaurant features a mix of traditional tables and chairs, long sharing tables with benches, and a ramen bar with stools around our open kitchen. All seating types are available for reservations.
On busy services, we may not always be able to guarantee a specific seating preference. If it’s important for any reason that you sit in a particular area, please make a note on your reservation or contact us in advance: thebank@matsudai.co.uk
Do you have a kids’ menu?
For guests under 16, we offer a pared-back version of most ramen bowls for £10.
If you’re bringing a child who’s too small to sit at the ramen bar, need space for a buggy, or require a highchair, please let us know when booking and we will do our best to accommodate.
Is the restaurant wheelchair accessible?
There are no steps into the restaurant or between the dining room and the toilets. One of our toilets is large enough to allow a wheelchair to turn.
Please make a note on your reservation or contact us in advance so we can ensure you’re seated at a table with suitable access and space: thebank@matsudai.co.uk
Can you accommodate my access needs?
We’ll do our best. Please let us know how we can support your visit by getting in touch: thebank@matsudai.co.uk
How can I pay?
We accept card and contactless payments, including American Express. For the safety of our team and premises, we operate as a cashless business. Thank you for your understanding.
